Leonard R. Basinski, age 88, of Powell, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2020. He was born to Louis and Theodosia Basinski in Chicago, IL May 10, 1932.
Len graduated from high school in Chicago, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. Len began his career with Commonwealth Edison before moving to Bechtel Corporation, working in the nuclear power division, before retiring in 2002. Len and his wife retired in Powell and were docents at the Columbus Zoo for 17 years. Len loved traveling, telling stories, spending time with family and friends, and teaching zoo visitors about the flamingos. He was extremely proud of his wife, his family, his faith and his Polish heritage. Len was an Associate of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Powell, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a Registered Professional Engineer. He was a Veteran of the United States Army.
Len is preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Diane, parents Louis and Theodosia, brothers George Malolepszy (Rose), Thaddeus Malolepsy (LaVern), Cecilia Malolepsy, Gertrude Malolepszy Sadik (Stanley). He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Due to the current gathering restrictions, there will not be a memorial service at this time. Internment at Resurrection Cemetery with a gravesite service will be held on Tuesday, June 2nd at 11 am.
Len’s family is deeply indebted to the staff at The Danbury, Capital City Hospice and the nurses and doctor’s at Riverside Methodist Hospital. We thank you for your care, compassion and professionalism.
