Robert Long 1949-2023

Robert Long

07/01/1949 - 05/28/2023

Robert A. Long, 73 of Westerville passed away May 28, 2023.

Bob was a Lifetime member Telephone Pioneers of America and a 34 year member of The Lakes Golf and Country Club. He was a proud graduate of Westerville High School, class of 1967. Bob worked for the phone co starting right after graduation driving throughout Ohio collecting money out of pay phones. He then learned the trade of cable splicing, and soon worked his way into management. Employed by Ohio bell, Ameritech, SBC, and AT&T, he retired 2000 from construction management. Bob’s career spanned from rotary phone to fiber optics and digital communication but if anyone ever asked him about it, he would proudly and simply say he was a telephone man.

After retirement, he worked part time as golf ranger at Royal American, and seasonally for Paul’s Marine doing things he loved, golfing, and boating. Bob enjoyed golf, boating, woodworking, travel, and was a fan of OSU, Browns, CBJ, and watching his grandchildren’s sports events. He was Past President and founding member of Columbus Checkers Booster Club, and Columbus Owls hockey teams.

Bob is predeceased by parents Fenton and Dorothy Long, grandfather Pearl Long, and in-laws he was very close to; Jan and Dan Broughman.

He is survived by wife of 40 years Susan, sons Adam (Jenny), and Sam, sister Carolyn Martin, grandchildren Ansley and Oliver whom he adored, special Aunt Anita Evans, special cousins Dale (Dewey) Long, Steve Evans, and numerous other family and friends.

He will always be remembered as compassionate, kind and humble friend to all, with a wonderful sense of humor.
