Phyllis Jean (Nee Pardoe) Goff, 81 , died at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, on Saturday, January 17, 2015 following an extended hospitalization. Her final hours were spent in the company of her loving family. Jean was born April 14, 1933, in Tyrone, Pa., the eldest of six children born to Rev. Gerald and Phyllis Pardoe. She graduated from Adams High School in Sidman, Pa. in 1949 at age 16, subsequently enrolling at McKeesport Hospital and Nursing School. After graduating with her Nursing Degree in 1952 she attended Otterbein College, where, while working as a nurse at the Student Health Center, she met her future husband, a fellow student, when he required medical attention for a splinter in his hand, a circumstance they both happily recalled as the first time she held his hand. They were married April 3, 1955 and shortly thereafter moved to Naperville, Illinois where her husband matriculated at Evangelical Theological Seminary. Following his graduation and ordination in 1958, the couple moved to Orbisonia, Pa., where Jean began her dual careers as a nurse and as a minister's wife. In her long career in nursing, Jean worked as a Registered Nurse in community hospitals in Naperville, Illinois, Marion, Ohio, and Johnstown, Pa., and at the Juvenile Diagnostic Center in Columbus, Ohio; as Director of Nursing at the Saint James Hospital at the Ohio Penitentiary (where she also trained inmate nurses,) at the Ohio State Hospital, first as Nursing Supervisor and later as Staff Development Trainer, and in several nursing and retirement centers, including Friendship Village in Columbus, Ohio. An unwavering exemplar of her Christian faith, Jean was a long-time member of Church of the Master United Methodist Church and a Stephen Minister. Her nursing career was a ministry of its own, and her work with delinquent youth, prison inmates, the mentally ill, and the infirm elderly clearly reflected the biblical section that so aptly sums up what it meant to her to be a Christian: Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungered , and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger and ye took me in. Naked and ye clothed me; I was sick and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord when say we thee an hungered and fed thee? Or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger and took thee in? Or naked and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Matthew 25: 34-40 Jean enjoyed working with her husband on their stamp collection, knitting and crafts, crossword puzzles, and completing jigsaw puzzles with her granddaughters. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Rev. William J. Goff, her sister, Norma Romayne Konigsburg, brother Gerald Pardoe, and brother and sister-in-law Robert and Jean Pardoe. She is survived by son and daughter in law, William and Janet Goff, daughter and son in law, Deborah and Stephen Radomski, daughter, Judith Goff, granddaughters Jennifer and Christina Radomski, granddaughters Meredith, Chloe, Lydia, and Beatrice Goff, great grandchildren Caitlin and Brayden Radomski, sisters and brothers in law Carole and Dave Zeltwanger, Diane and Fred Clausner, brother in law Richard Konigsburg, brother and sister in law Willard and Cindy Goff, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
