Obituary for Sally L. Yerina

Sally L. Yerina 1933-2020

Sally L. Yerina

10/11/1933 - 03/31/2020

Sally Lou Scott Yerina of Westerville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2020.  She was born October 11, 1933, and raised in Columbus, Ohio.   A proud Polar Bear (Class of 1951), she made life-long friends at Columbus North High School where she was ahead of her time in playing numerous sports including tennis and basketball.  She attended Miami University, and The Ohio State University where she met the love of her life, Joseph R. Yerina.  Married February 5, 1955, they lived in Michigan, Massachusetts, New York and Ohio, and had 5 children.  Becoming a widow at age 34, she raised their family on her own - always finding ways to make ends meet and provide for their needs and educations.  She worked in finance at Toledo Scale, but that didn’t stop her from traveling numerous miles to sit on many hard bleachers to cheer her children on in their various sports, plays, and other activities. They were her pride and joy.  Later in life, Sally also became the Team Mom and Official Scorekeeper for The Kids, a softball team whose roster included her daughter, Mary, her son, Jim, and her grandsons, Justin and Daniel.

To say she was a sports fan was an understatement.  Sally rooted for the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds, and enjoyed watching golf, basketball and football.  She reached her sports pinnacle by going to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.  In addition to the family dogs, Skippy and Phantom, Sally loved all dogs and annually watched The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, attending in person in 1999.  She also was an avid walker – countless laps at Sharon Woods Metro Park; reader – weekly trips to the Westerville Public Library; movie-goer – classics at the Ohio Theatre Summer Movie Series; and, later in life, traveler.  Sally particularly enjoyed family vacations, international tours to Ireland, Italy and Greece, and annual Myrtle Beach trips with friends.

Always able to strike up a conversation with anyone, she often found fellow Polar Bear alumni on her travels.  This served her well as a member of the Polar Bear Alumni Association and as a volunteer for the annual North on the Fourth celebration.  Sally also volunteered at the Westerville Senior Center where she spent numerous hours making friends through group lunches and card games.

Preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jayne (McCombs) and Sterling C. Scott; her husband, Joseph, R. Yerina; and her best friend, S. Vivian Povisil, she is survived by her children Linda C. Zuby (David) of Charlottesville, Virginia, Earl D. Yerina (Catherine Ong) of Alamo, California, John A. Yerina of Martinez, California, James M. Yerina of Westerville, Ohio, and Mary K. Yerina (Robert Redfield) of Dublin, Ohio; by her grandsons Justin, Christopher, Daniel and Kevin; by her sister, Jane Scott Jones (John) of San Pedro, California, by her brother, Steven L. Scott (Christina) of Columbus, Ohio; and by numerous nieces, nephews and friends including her “6th child,” Rick Rano.

Sally’s life will be celebrated later this year when family and friends can gather with abandon to properly do so.  In the interim, the family would like to thank the staff of Danbury Senior Living for the loving care of Sally during her last year.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Joseph Richard and Sally Scott Yerina Endowment Fund for Cancer Research (Fund Number 646058) at The Ohio State University Foundation, PO Box 710811, Columbus, Ohio 43271-0811, or online at https://www.osu.edu/giving/.
