Obituary for Tony Mitrione

Anthony (Tony) Mitrione, 85, of Westerville, Ohio, passed away at Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio on January 18, 2019, after battling Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Tony was born in Newark, NJ on May 12, 1933. He attended Arts High School also in Newark. He served two years in the Army (1953-54), doing his basic training at Fort Pickett, VA. He married Winifred Doris Dickson on June 23, 1956, in Sacred Heart Church in Vailsburg, Newark, NJ and remained married to her until he passed.

Tony got his Associate Degree in electrical engineering from Newark College of Engineering. He worked for Western Electric Co, first in New Jersey, then in New York City, until transferring to Ohio in 1970. He was a repair manual writer and trainer with AT&T after they obtained Western Electric and he traveled to various states to facilitate the training. He retired at age 56. He was an avid golfer, having played almost every course in the state of Ohio. He also enjoyed watching sports and having breakfast with his buddies every Monday morning. He taught his kids how to throw and catch and later, the art of yelling at the referees/umpires for bad calls when watching sports.

Tony was preceded in death by Joseph (father) and Carmella (mother) (Arminio) Mitrione - losing his father when he was 14 years old. Also passing before him were Uncle Joe Arminio, Uncle Jimmy Arminio (Silvia) and his sister’s husband Rocco Volpe. His father had 13 siblings and his mother 11, residing both in the US and Italy.

He is survived by his wife Winifred (Winnie)(Dickson) Mitrione, his son, Steven Mitrione (Connie Ellis) and his daughter Valerie Mitrione (Mary Vance). Also, his sister Angelina Volpe and her beloved children, Louis Volpe (Leslie), Diane Volpe, Laurie Volpe, and Vicki Volpe. His cherished granddaughter Stephanie (Grange) Paxton (Chris) gave him the absolute joys of his life, his great grandsons – Dominic and Elijah Weber. His neighbors, Melissa and Jamie and their children provided great comfort and joy in Tony’s later years. He loved seeing the kids playing in the back yard and when they greeted him.

His final wishes were to be cremated and have his remains scattered at one of his favorite golf courses. No service or memorial is planned and in lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the American Cancer Society in his name.
