Willis B. Gibboney of Westerville died on September 26, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife Jo Ann (Copeland), son David, parents Joy (Branson) and Harold Gibboney and sister Thelma Goldrick. He is survived by daughter Lynette, son John and wife Marianna, granddaughters Jennifer and Rebecca Gibboney, great grandson John David Deaton. Willis was born in 1924 on a farm in Drake County Ohio and grew up in Ohio including Columbus, Martel, Bloomville, Troy, Xenia, Peebles and Wilmington. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1942, attended Wilmington College for a year then served in the U.S. Navy as a gun control man aboard a ship in the Pacific Theater. Willis greatly appreciated the 16 May 2009 Honor Flight along with WW II veterans to visit the WW II Memorial in Washington. After the war he and Jo Ann married and came to Columbus where he attended the Ohio State University from 1946 through 1950 earning a degree in civil engineering. He was employed by the Ohio Department of Transportation from 1950 until 1980 then worked as a consulting engineer until retiring in 1996. His work has been featured in State and National highway publications. In 1999 the board of trustees of Flexible Pavements of Ohio gave Willis their annual William W. Baker Award which recognizes outstanding contributions to the asphalt industry of Ohio. He was a life member of the National Societies of Professional Engineers and was a member of the Westerville United Methodist Church of the Master, the Ohio Health Foundation Circle of Friends, and the Westerville Lions Club (40 years). Donations may be made in his memory to the Cat Welfare Society at 741 Wetmore Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43214. Service was provided by HILL FUNERAL HOME of Westerville.
