Obituary for Ruth Baird

Ruth Baird 1924-2017

Ruth Baird

05/15/1924 - 12/20/2017

Ruth Hope (Walters) Baird, 93, of Johnstown, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, surrounded by her family at Riverside Methodist Hospital, in Columbus, Ohio.

Ruth was born on May 15, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late James Monroe and Mary Etta (Primmer) Walters. She was the fourth child, following siblings Virginia (William) Cruse, Jack (Birdie Fritz) Walters, and Mildred (Ray) Duffy Finley, all of whom preceded her in death. As Ruth often recounted her mother jokingly saying, she was “hope…fully” the last, hence her middle name. However, she was followed by sisters, Mary Eileen Walters and Doris (Vernon) Stone, both of whom survive her.

Ruth was a loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Price Baird. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Mary Jane (Steve) Carr of Galena, Ohio; grandsons, Michael (Mindy) Carr of Dublin, Ohio, Ryan (LeAnne) Carr, of Sunbury, Ohio, and Geoffrey Carr of Sunbury, Ohio; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Isabelle, Emily and Alexander; numerous nieces and nephews; and her cat, Kitty.

Ruth served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, just outside Washington D.C. She remained interested and involved with veterans’ activities throughout her life and participated in an Honor Flight. She was a dedicated member of the Harlem Road (formally New Hope) United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

Ruth was determined and independent, humorous and full of vitality. She worked hard throughout her life and gave freely of her time and resources to many causes, never looking for praise or recognition. Content with what she had, Ruth never hesitated to help others with any extra that came along.

Celebration of Life Services will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., at Harlem Road United Methodist Church, 5520 Harlem Road, Galena, OH 43021, with visitation prior to the service, from 11:30 to 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Forest Memory Gardens in Columbus, Ohio. Donations can be made in Ruth’s honor to the Humane Society of Delaware County, 4920 St Rt 37 E, Delaware, OH 43015, www.hsdcohio.org.
