Robert Joseph Mills, Sr., Super Hero Peripatologist and champion of visually impaired and blind children passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 surrounded by family at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio at the age of 77. Rob's birth place of Boston, Massachusetts was evident in his lilting New England accent and love for the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins. A strong Irish Ice Warrior who from an early age could be found carrying a hockey stick and skates for a battle of strength and strategy in the hockey arena, he played throughout his childhood, high school, college and tried out of the 1964 Olympic team. Adventure and his desire to see the world propelled Rob to join the United States Navy where he served on the USS Albany and USS Macon prior to graduating from Boston State College (B.S Education) and Boston College (M .ED). When Rob was not paving the innovative pathways of teaching, learning and Orientation and Mobility at the Ohio State School for the Blind, he could be found at home with his family or out with his buddies for a round of golf, hand of poker or bowling with his Moose brothers. Rob was an avid watcher of Hill Street Blues, Cheers, Law and Order, West Wing and any sport televised. Rob's heart belonged to his wife of 46 years, Roberta Ann (Daffy) that he treasured. Friends and colleagues could rarely escape a "Robulation" conversation without him sharing a photo or bragging about his children. Once his joyful grandchildren arrived, they stole his attention and heart and all bets were off in any debate of who has the best grandchildren ever. Rob was an active disciple serving our Lord in many ways as a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Northeast Lions Club. He held strong beliefs in serving the Lord in this life and the next. He was preceded in death by baby Mills, his Mother Mary Ann Mills, Father John Joseph Mills, Father in Law Charles Robert Fouts, Brother In Law Ken Carlsen and Santos Hercules. Survived by his Wife Roberta Ann Mills, Sisters Frances Ann Carlsen and Carolyn Ann Mills, Mother In Law Lowella Irene Fouts, Sister In Laws Virginia Irene Alabbasi and Mary Ellen Bigler, Brother In Law Richard David Fouts (Sue), Children Kimberly Ann Normand (Nairan) and Robert Joseph Mills, Jr. (Stephanie), Grandchildren Nairan Oakes Normand, Jr., Abram Joseph Normand, Robert Joseph Mills, III, Carissa Renee Mills and Franklin David Funez, many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4-7PM, at HILL FUNERAL HOME, 220 S. State Street, Westerville, OH 43081. The funeral will be at 11AM Thursday at Epworth United Methodist Church, 5100 Karl Road, Columbus, Ohio 43229. Rob will be laid to rest at Blendon Cemetery, Westerville, Ohio. To help continue Rob's life work of helping visually impaired children gain confidence and ability for independent travel please make memorial contributions to the Northeast Lions Club's Eye Care Fund (5218 Double Eagle Dr., Westerville, Ohio 43081).
