My dear Aunt Martha, you and Uncle Andy were a very large part of my childhood. The memories I have of visits to you are filled with laughter and good food. I loved when your children would visit and play with us. We had a wonderful family in New Jersey including your parents, sisters, brothers and many cousins. When we met Uncle Andy's family in Florida the fun times continued. You found the joy and laughter in all situations and I loved that about you. God bless you, please watch over us all.

Odilia and Orin Sumner

Obituary for Martha Kubalak

Martha Kubalak 1932-2023

Martha Kubalak

07/29/1932 - 01/17/2023

On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, Martha E. Kubalak passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her loving family.

Martha, affectionately called “Sunny,” “Marie-Marthe,” and “Grandmere,” was born on July 29, 1932 to Jean-Baptiste and Marie-Anne Fortin, and grew up in the northern most point in Maine.  As a young woman, Martha moved to New Jersey, where she met her husband and the love of her life, Andrew Kubalak. Martha’s biggest joy in life was doing everything with her devoted, loving husband Andy.

A friend to everyone she met, Martha enjoyed an enormous circle of friends her entire life.  She would do anything for anyone, and her family and friends were so fortunate to know her unending kindness.  Martha embodied strength, hope and joy; she was called Sunny for very good reason.

Those who knew Martha will remember how she loved to reminisce about growing up in northern Maine, where she picked apples from the orchard where she lived, where bear cubs often emerged from under the front porch, where deep snowfalls reached the second floor windows of her home (they shoveled out from the inside and used snowshoes), and where she so happily helped her mother fill the root cellar with preserved fruits and vegetables before winter. Her childhood home was such a special place to Martha and she maintained lifelong relationships with friends and extended family from this unique French-speaking community.

We will never forget our Sunny as quite playful and funny. Often ornery, she played a favorite game with grandchildren when dining together in restaurants… shooting the wrapper off a straw with perfect aim at her grandchildren, in a race to hit them before they could strike back.  She was a natural at making everyone feel special, happy and at ease.  A long-time member of a weekly ceramics club, Martha loved her ceramics hobby because it brought her together with friends to create beautiful works of art which she loved to gift to others.  Our memories will also include that she loved to cook for others, and especially loved sharing her famous meatballs.

Martha is survived by her husband Andy, daughters Marie Malloy (Sean), Denise Thacker (Dave May), sons David (Julie) and Andy, sister Jeanne Kinsley, sister-in-law Geri Fortin, cherished grandchildren Emily, Jennifer, Carl (Shelby), Owen, and Olivia, and beautiful great-grandchildren Iggy, Etta and Nora. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Adrien, Edmond, Phillip, Donat, Patrick, and sister Rita.

Visitation will be held at Hill Funeral Home, 220 South State Street, Westerville, Ohio 43081 on  January 25, 2023 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m, followed by a memorial service at 5:00pm.  Live internet streaming of the services will also be available The Hill Funeral Home YouTube page. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
