Obituary for Robert McCarthy

Robert McCarthy 1946-2022

Robert McCarthy

11/24/1946 - 05/12/2022

Robert (Bob) McCarthy of Galena, died peacefully at Kobacker Hospice House on May 12th with his wife Diane at his side, after a long fight with diabetes. He was 75.

Bob was born on Nov.24, 1946 to Clarence and Helen (Hebb) McCarthy in the Bronx, NY. He grew up with his 2 brothers, playing all kinds of sports but he especially loved baseball. As a young man he was talented enough to have been scouted by the N.Y. Yankees. After attending the University of Tampa, Bob spent some time as a high school Physics teacher. The majority of his career was spent in restaurant management, including Friendly’s, Ground Round, GD Ritzy’s, The Olive Garden, McDonald’s, and Burger King. In the 90’s, he started his own information systems recruiting company, The Robert Erin Company. Once retired from there, he began to finally enjoy time golfing with his buddies and fishing on Hoover on his pontoon boat, usually with his good friend Kevin Winters. He was a proud and dedicated member of the Buckeye Boat Club, serving for a time as Vice Commodore. He had an amazing garden every year and was an avid reader, but most of all loved spending time with his family. His grandchildren spent countless hours together with him creating memories like cutting down “the biggest” Christmas tree, having Easter Egg scavenger hunts, picking apples, making beef jerky, playing board games, and sharing holiday celebrations. Thanksgiving was always his favorite as evidenced by the monster turkey he chose every year. He loved his 3 children very much and although 2 of them, Sean and Dawn, live in SC, he always cherished his visits with them. His daughter, Erin, who lives in Columbus, was fortunate enough to spend many hours with her dad while growing up. This included him supporting her in school sports, academics, drama, and singing. Bob was married to his first wife Phyllis, Sean and Dawn’s mother, for 9 years. For the next 44 years he was happily married to Diane. Diane attended Nursing School in Buffalo where they lived for 7 years before Bob was transferred to Ohio. In Buffalo, they both worked for the Buffalo Bills on game days selling concessions in the frigid Buffalo winter weather. Bob was an animal lover with a soft heart. He had 3 cats over the years who he became the “assistant” to in writing the annual Christmas Cat Letter. This became one of the funniest and most anticipated parts of the Christmas season for everyone. Every year people couldn’t believe a cat could be so creative with such a dry sense of humor!

Bob and Diane enjoyed many relaxing vacations but especially loved spending time at their condo in Florida several times a year. One of Bob’s favorite things to do there was visit the Loggerhead Sea turtle rescue hospital. While in Florida Bob was able to reconnect with his 2 brothers who live there. They had many lively discussions about current events as each of them was very opinionated and intelligent! Bob knew the most obscure facts which was obvious when he and Diane watched Jeopardy together every night…

Bob will be dearly missed by his family and friends. “You can finally enjoy some good fishing without getting rained out.”

Bob is survived by his wife, Diane, children Erin (Dennis) Rhodes, Sean McCarthy, Dawn (Billy) Ardelt, brothers William (Kathleen) and Allan (Austine), grandchildren Peyton, Austin and Landon Rhodes, Gabrielle and Joseph Ardelt, Cara McCarthy, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob has requested no funeral service.
