I remember the time (about 40-45 years ago), my parents (Bob & Helen Rochon), my younger two sisters (Janet & Sharon), and I visited Ed and Judie for a weekend. David was about 1-2 years old and was eating meals in his high chair. As children, we were very excited about dessert, but couldn’t say the word “dessert” in David’s presence, because he refused to finish his meal and would throw a tantrum until he received his dessert. So, the code word for “dessert” was “garbage”. All of us kids would ask about the garbage and David had no idea what we were talking about! He ate his meal, while the rest of us were looking forward to dessert. As a child, I thought it was so cool that we were in the know on the Rochon family code.

Also, during this weekend trip, Ed and Judie had other adult relatives over on Saturday night. Judie played the piano and sang, while the others sang along. Us kids had a great time (probably downstairs) playing because we could be as loud as we wanted and the adults didn’t hear us! I still have very found memories of that weekend and of Judie

Obituary for Judie Rochon

Judie Rochon 1938-2022

Judie Rochon

11/01/1938 - 02/09/2022

Judith Louise (Hauck) Rochon, age 83, of Westerville passed away on February 9, 2022 at The Gables of Westerville. Judie was born on November 1, 1938 in Ionia, Michigan to the late Joe and Martha (Schafer) Hauck. She graduated in 1956 from Sacred Heart Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, and in 1960 from Central Michigan University with an Education major and a Music minor. Judie began teaching English in Utica, Michigan before her marriage and, after raising her children, resumed her teaching career at St. James the Less Elementary and St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus, Ohio. One of her proudest achievements was serving as Chair of the English Department at DeSales. Judie particularly enjoyed cheering for the University of Michigan, much to the dismay of her students. Go Blue! She was a long-time parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, where she cantored masses and sang with the funeral choir for many years. Throughout her lifetime, Judie shared both her vocal and instrumental talents with every parish of which she was a member. On the homefront, she was an avid reader, crossword puzzler, cook, and quilter, and her grandchildren will forever remember and appreciate her piano singalongs and freshly baked cookies.

In addition to her parents, Judie was preceded in death by her son-in-law Charlie McKnight; her sister and brother-in-law Rona and Phil Cook; brothers-and-sisters-in-law Joe Rochon, Phyllis and Paul Pomeroy, Bud and Lil Rochon, Bob Urka, and Sandy Allard; and parents-in-law Ferd and Dorothy Rochon.

Judie leaves to cherish her memory beloved husband Ed Rochon, whom she married on November 24, 1962; three daughters, Ann (John) Lodder of Alexandria, Laurie McKnight of Columbus, and Amy (Blaine) White of Glenview, Illinois; one son, David (Nori) Rochon of Appleton, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren, Dominique (Ryan) Combs, Matt McKnight, Christianna Lodder, Jeff McKnight, Greg McKnight, Adam White, Lauren White, Brendan Rochon, and Ethan Rochon; two great-grandchildren, Marlin Combs and Josephine Combs; one brother, Fred (Maggie) Hauck of Decatur, Alabama; a sister-in-law, Dot Urka of Ludington, Michigan; a brother-in-law, Paul Allard of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and many nephews and nieces.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of The Gables of Westerville and Capital City Hospice for their tender care of Judie over the last several months.
