Obituary for Hillary Johnsen

Hillary Johnsen 1978-2017

Hillary Johnsen

08/09/1978 - 11/16/2017

Hillary Leigh Johnsen, 39, died suddenly in her home in Westerville.

Over the course of her life, she achieved success both academically and in sports. She was not only a loving and caring individual but was beautiful and very funny.

Hillary graduated from Westerville North High School in 1997 and played on several select soccer and softball teams in her earlier youth. She made good friends with her coaches and teammates during those active years. She remained a sports enthusiast throughout her adult life, and joined her family as an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan.

She attended Bowling Green University and received an education degree (cum laude) from Ohio Dominican College, Columbus, Ohio. While teaching elementary school in the Licking Heights and Westerville City Schools, she took classes, also at Ohio Dominican, toward her master’s degree. She achieved a reading certification from Ohio Dominican and worked as a Reading Specialist for Westerville City Schools which complemented her love of stories, journaling and books.

Her parents, David and Jan Johnsen, long-time residents of Westerville, want friends and family to know how empathetic and loving their daughter was. She adored her two children and was sensitive toward the suffering of others (sometimes overly so) and accepted people from all walks of life regardless of their struggles.

Hillary is survived by her parents; two children, Tyler and Olivia; her sister Heather McSwiggin (Casey); a niece and nephew (Scarlett and Riley McSwiggin); and many aunts, uncles and cousins far and wide. She will be missed at many family reunions where Hillary was always welcome and could light up a room with her winning smile and creative stories.

The Johnsens wish to thank the many family members and friends who have supported (and continue to support them) during this challenging time. In honor of Hillary the family has chosen to create a savings account for Tyler and Olivia's education. If you choose to contribute please send checks payable to Dave Johnsen. Send to Dave Johnsen, PO box 1301 Westerville, OH 43086.
