Obituary for Martin S. Slane

Martin S. Slane 1925-2022

Martin S. Slane

07/09/1925 - 03/15/2022

Martin S. Slane, 96, of Westerville, OH passed away on March 15th, 2022.  He is preceded in death by father Frank, mother Blanche, brother Robert, sisters Vivian and Althea.  He is survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth of 73 years, son Martin (Leslie) Slane, daughter Althea Kay Karlquist (Bill Alexander). Grandsons Daniel (Susie) Slane, Cody (Erin) Karlquist, Donald (Gina) Karlquist, and 9 great grandchildren.

Martin was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1925 and grew up in southern Indiana where he graduated from Hardinsburg HS, and then he served in the United States Navy during WWII. After meeting and marrying his wife Mary, they relocated to Ohio and had a long successful career working for the State Highway Department before retirement. After retirement he took up many hobbies and activities; bowling and golf weekly and his favorite past time of woodworking.  If he met someone, the chances are they would receive a wood carved gift from Martin the next time they met up. He always kept active. For years before the pandemic in 2020 he would be up at the Westerville Community Center to workout…waiting for the doors to open up every weekday. Traveling around the country was also a great enjoyment Martin and Mary would do, whether it was to Missouri or California to see relatives or just sightseeing up north, down south or east or west.

Martin will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the Westerville Community.
