A celebration of mom’s life will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 at the chapel at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 N. High Street, Lewis Center, OH 43035.  This will be a Closed Family affair.

Born and raised in Germany, Helga was a spunky young girl, the youngest of her siblings and the apple of her father’s eye.  She was a local track athlete growing up and had many friends.  Helga met Corporal Harold Dean Waldrop when he was stationed with the 3rd Infantry Division in Kitzingen, Germany in the mid-1950’s.  They married and began a long life together; phase 1 was as a military spouse.  Helga reflected often that the twenty-two years as an army spouse were some of the best in her life.  Over the course of 16 changes of duty station and moves around the globe in those 22 years, she made a home for her three children wherever the army sent them.  Helga doted over her three army brats as they matriculated through Department of Defense schooling.  She was active in girl scouting as a leader in Europe and the USA.  When Harold spent 1-year assignments, unaccompanied, overseas or deployed to a combat environment (Vietnam), Helga kept the home fires burning and distracted her kids from ever thinking that dad would not return home safely.  Her children said Helga was their Rock throughout their lives.  She provided steady counsel when teenagers had personal struggles they were going through.  Her loving advice on academic and career choices made pondering decisions that much easier.  Helga raised her children to be GOD fearing, law-abiding, hardworking Americans and ensured Christian values were at the very fiber of their character.  In their last duty station before retirement, Fort Knox, KY, Helga became a 2nd Mom to many of her children’s friends.  Her home was always open, inviting and a refuge for other teenagers needing a loving hand or comfort.

Helga had a bubbly personality and was very outgoing.  There was not a stranger she met who did not become an immediate friend within the first 20 minutes of conversation.  After Harold retired in 1978, they both settled in Columbus, Ohio and began Phase 2 of their life.  They instantly became avid Ohio State Football fans and were parishioners at St. Pauls Catholic church in Westerville.  Both she and Harold worked for McDonalds Corporation in the Columbus, Ohio market until their retirement.  Helga was an instant success in her role as a Community Engagement coordinator for McDonalds.  She planned and hosted many events expanding community outreach as new stores were being built.   Helga had a great life post-military and made numerous new friends.  She even volunteered in the Worthington school district as a reading specialist for hundreds of children.

After Harold passed away, Mom met a widower in 2012; Mr. Lowell Fitzpatrick and they spent time traveling the world together until her death.

We know Helga is at peace as she rejoins Harold in the arms of GOD.
