Calvin Edward Anderson, Ed.D, age 88 of Westerville, passed away suddenly on September 21, 2019 at his home that he shared with his beloved wife, Lorraine (Gilbert) Anderson. Cal, a former Coast Guard midshipman along the coast of Maine, was born in Old Town, Maine, on August 27, 1931 to Ray and Jessie (Small) Anderson. He was a 1949 graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn, Me.
Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 1957, Cal went on to teaching and coaching stints at Lou Buker Junior High School in Augusta, and Windham High School. He was the Director of Pineland Hospital and Training Center in Pownal, Me, from the mid 1960s until 1967 when he loaded his family of eight and embarked upon an eventful 30 day cross country trip in a small travel trailer to San Francisco, CA, where he ultimately received his Master of Arts degree from San Francisco State College in 1968.
From San Francisco, Cal headed back east to Syracuse, N.Y., where he continued his advanced education, attaining his Doctor of Education degree from Syracuse University in 1968. Upon completion of his doctoral course work, Cal accepted a teaching position on the Faculty for Exceptional Children at The Ohio State University’s Nisonger Center, Columbus, OH, in 1970, where he was an Assistant Professor of special education until 1974. During this time, Cal was awarded the highest honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, induction into the Order of Kentucky Colonels in 1973.
From 1974 until 1980, Cal was the Director of Special Education with the Portland (Maine) Public Schools. The next stop for him was a faculty position at the University of Maine at Fort Kent from 1981 until 1991, when he accepted the office of Superintendent of Schools at the Woodland Consolidated Schools in Woodland, Maine until 1996. Cal wrapped up his highly successful professional career in 1996 by relocating to Lake Wales, FL, where he and Lorraine embarked upon their golden years of retirement together. In 2006, Cal and Lorraine made the decision to continue their retirement in the Columbus, OH, suburb of Westerville where they could enjoy their sunset years among several of their children and families.
Cal was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Jessie (Small) Anderson of Auburn, Me; sister Julie (Ken) Miles, sister Evelyn Brown, and sister Carolyn (Joseph) Clark, all of Auburn. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Lorraine (Gilbert) Anderson of Westerville, OH; brother Raymond (Lorraine) Anderson of Turner, Me; sister Jeannine Clark of Auburn; sister Myrna (Dick) Demers of Lewiston, Me; brother Dennis (Tina) Anderson of South Paris, Me, daughter Kathy (Chip) Gentile, of Galloway, OH; daughter Nancy (Steve) Pusateri of Galena, OH; son Gary (Jackie) Anderson of Westerville; son Jeffrey (Cyndi) Anderson of Soldier Pond, Me; son Scott (Susan) Anderson of Caribou, Me; and Jon (Denise) Anderson of Wallagrass, Me; along with grandchildren Jason and Amy Gentile; Gina, Scott and Karen Pusateri; Christopher, Ashley and Mary Cate Anderson; David, Michael, Katy, Jeff, Tim and Amanda Anderson; Bryan, Jen, Matthew and Shawn Anderson; Cody, Alyssa and Jesse Anderson; and 12 great grandchildren.
Cal was the type of gentleman who would quickly light up a room and become a friend to all. No greater love for his family has any man. He was always one to sacrifice himself for the sake of his loving family, often times working two to three jobs in order to properly support his growing brood during the early years. Cal was the essence of honor and integrity, was loved by all, and set the standard for what it means to be a God-fearing Christian gentleman. He will be terribly missed by all who were privileged to call him Husband, Dad, Poppy, Uncle, Brother, and Friend.
