Obituary for Doris Mae Davis

Doris Davis, 93, of Westerville, Ohio passed away peacefully in her home on November 26, 2018. She was born on September 27, 1925 in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, graduated from PJ Jacobs High School and attended the University of Wisconsin. While working at a lake resort in northern Wisconsin, she met her future husband, John A Davis. They were married in 1947 and lived in Chicago until a job transfer took them to Duluth, Minnesota where they started their family. In 1957 another transfer moved the family to Worthington Ohio. For their retirement years, John and Doris settled in Westerville, Ohio, moving into a new home built by son Steve.

Doris was active in St. Michael’s parish, the Worthington Women’s Club, volunteer activities and charities as well as various bridge groups. She was an exceptional cook and love darts and crafts. She is fondly remembered by her grandchildren for many art projects, apple picking and pumpkin carving.

Fostering music appreciation in her sons was accomplished by supporting piano lessons at a young age. With skills of her own, she would regularly assist in practices by accompanying in duets or helping to read difficult music notation. Occasionally, she may lightheartedly dance into the room while the boys practiced.

Doris had a soft place in her heart for animals and at one point rescued their dog, Mikey, from a negligent home. She found companionship with her cat, which she tended to lovingly every day. Insuring the birds had food in their feeder and houses hung in the yard were further testament to her love of nature.

In her early years she worked at Fannie May Candies in Chicago and later at The Ohio State University in Larkins Hall.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John; her parents, Martha (Petta) and Anthony Karner of Stevens Point, Wisconsin; and her sisters, Karol, Margaret and Elaine.

Doris is survived by her two sons, John S and Steven (Jean). She was grandmother to Christopher, Lindsay, Kimberly (John), Jessie and Carly (Steve and Jean) and great-grandmother of Kyler, Kalyn (Lindsay), Ashton, Avery, Ayla (Christopher) and Maxwell (Kimberly). Doris loved her family dearly and will be missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, December 1 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Westerville. Visitation in the church begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by a mass at 10:30 a.m.
