James R. Salyer, age 89, passed away peacefully at home, under the expert and tender care of Ohio Health Hospice, on November 4, 2016. He was born, raised, and spent his entire adult life in Columbus, Ohio. A true “South End” kid, Schiller Park was his second home. He played football, city league, throughout his high school career, where he broke his nose numerous times and sped around the field earning himself the nickname, “Spider.” Several years after graduating from South High School, he served as a Combat Engineer and later VIP driver in the Army in Munich, Germany, during the Korean War. Discharged in 1952, he returned home to work at Columbia Gas, serving as a leakage inspector and, later, supervisor of leakage. He retired and he and his wife, Judie, sold their Grandview Heights home and built a retirement home in Westerville where he remained until he passed away. He loved his dog, Max, playing poker, a good cigar, and a plate of home made spaghetti. Preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Susie Salyer; and his brother Art (Lola) Salyer; and his sister-in-law, Bonnie Salyer. Survived by first wife, Grace Salyer; second wife, Judie Salyer; daughter Marcia (Dan) Beierle; Step-son Peter (Laurie) Luft; daughter Regina (Jeremy) Thompson; son, John (Wendy) Salyer; grandchildren Lorien and Corin Salyer, Benjamin, Andrew, Megan, and Abigail Luft; brothers Byron and Donald (Patti) Salyer; and sister, Betty Jean Nida, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
