Obituary for Betty Rae Smith

Betty Rae Smith 1930-2015

Betty Rae Smith

09/10/1930 - 12/10/2015

Betty Rae Smith (85) of Westerville, Ohio went to be with the Lord under the care of Mt. Carmel Hospice early Thursday morning, December 10, 2015.

Born on September 10, 1930 to Rayburn and Gladys Marie Flick of Weirton, WV, Betty Rae graduated from West Liberty College and continued her studies at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She later married her high school sweetheart Richard L. Smith on July 17, 1954 in Great Falls, MT. and moved to Flint, MI where they had two children, Diana K. Wetzel and R. Kent Smith.

Music has always been her greatest passion. Betty Rae began her career as a pianist and band director, but went on to become an accomplished oboist who played with the Flint Symphony, the Sagninaw Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, the Marietta Civic Symphonette and taught public school music in four different states. In her later years, she also held an interim teaching post at Ohio University in Athens, became a church organist, a bell choir director, and also a substitute choral director for the Parkersburg High School A Capella Choir

Betty Rae loved traveling and playing golf with her beloved husband, playing bridge, baking & decorating for Christmas, and playing the occasional marathon game of Michiganopoly with her two grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth and Andrew James. She spent a lifetime playing four-hand Mozart piano duets with relatives/friends and took great joy in providing piano accompaniment for her son, Kent, on numerous performances: everything from local church recitals to the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

Betty Rae took delight in all of her family and friends, but she was especially devoted to her sisters, Carol Elaine, Norma Lynne, JoAnne and each of their children. Most recently, she enjoyed the privilege of becoming “Great-Grandma B” to little Olive Grace.

Betty Rae will be remembered in many ways: as a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt “B”, loving grandmother and passionate musician, teacher and friend. Loving, and being loved by, this amazing woman of faith has changed all of our lives forever.
