Gloria Jean Lyons (Thompson), age 67, passed on to the Lord with the help of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Home comforted by her husband, two daughters and Maggie the border terrier who was her constant companion for the past 13 ½ years. Born October 29, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio to Pauline Thompson (DeHays) and Francis Thompson, both who preceded her in death. She was a 1964 graduate of Columbus South High School, the South High Bulldogs, attended both Ohio Dominican and Franklin University. Gloria is survived by her husband of 47 years, Orville R. Lyons, children Wendy Lyons (Andy) Swary and Amy Frazer Lyons, sisters Susan Haag and Faye Thompson, grand children Taylor Frazer, Aiden Frazer, Sebastian Swary and Vivian Swary, nephew Robert (Jennifer) Cox and niece Lori-Ane (Steve) Slaggy. She is also survived by her favorite cousin Jo (Neal) Dimon, favorite Uncle Leo (Charlotte) DeHayes and favorite Aunt Mary Kay Thompson. Gloria was a convert to the Catholic Faith. She was a Buckeye football and basketball fan and loved the Cincinnati Reds, the Cleveland Browns and the Columbus Blue Jackets. How do you describe the life of such a special person in a couple sentences? Gloria loved her children and grand children, would do anything for people, had many friends, was a gourmet cook, the family and community event planner, loved to travel with Orv and Maggie across the USA and Canada and loved to walk on ocean beaches. Gloria loved to visit local wineries when traveling to talk to the owners whether it was in Napa Valley, the Finger Lakes, Ontario CA wine country or South Dakota. Gloria was determined to beat breast cancer, always positive and active all day long. Her four grand kids knew her as the “Grilled Cheese Queen”. She retired from the Nationwide Life Insurance Company after 20 years of service in 2012. She was an original member of the St Ann’s Hospital Guild. Viewing will be 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday June 12th at the Hill Funeral Home, 220 South State St, Westerville. Mass will be celebrated by Father Michael Hinterschied at 10:30 AM Friday June 13th at St Paul’s Catholic Church, 313 North State St, Westerville with viewing available one hour before Mass at St Paul’s. Immediately following Mass, Gloria will be entombed at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 9571 North High St, Lewis Center OH.
